The renowned Oromo-Ethiopian athlete Genzebe Dibaba, received a warm reception from her fan in Portland, Oregon’s indoor championship finale. Dibaba cruised to a gold medal victory with 8 minutes, 47.43 seconds. Runner-up silver medalist Meseret Defar, also an Oromo-Ethiopian finished at 8 minutes, 54.26 seconds.
This is the second gold medal from Oromo athletes in the women competition. Earlier in the 1500 meter finale, Sifan Hassan, an Oromo born athlete running for the Netherlands cruised to victory with 4 minutes, 4.96 seconds.
Oromo athletes have been the forefront of distant running dynasty for over five decades. Abebe Bikila’s barefooted gold victory in the Rome’s 1960 marathon was the first ever Oromo dominance in the distant running competition.
The short amateur video below recorded by Desu Tefera, a proud fan of Genzebe Dibaba, show the warm reception the athlete received at her marvelous victory. When asked about her victory Dibaba, in her native language Afaan Oromoo, she says “this is my third time being involved in indoor championship and I am very happy for it! I was able to ran by myself (dominating) which enable me to win.” Desu Tefera congratulated her with a warm kiss before telling her “you are an Oromo hero and we love you very much!”

The amazing Genzebe Dibaba was in Portland. How did I miss that. The greatest running athlete in the world an Olympic gold medalist. Brother Desu Tefera, She is an Ethiopian Heroine too. Millions of Ethiopians outside her Oromo regional state identify her as the symbol of their national athletic heroine. Why attach a limited label on her “you are an Oromo hero”. A Tribalist and exclusionarist statement and a hypocrisy when we live in a multicultural city in Portland, Oregon, America working and going to School with many ethnics and races. Please let’s stop promoting tribalist sentiment in our ancestral homeland? That is shameful, but I admire you receiving her and showing support and love as a fan when she came here to Portland.
